Aeolia
Aeolia was commissioned by
the band for their CD, 'Simple Gifts' . The band's MD, Graham
Jacklin, wanted something original to record so turned to Chris Tagg.
Chris has been playing Tuned Percussion with the band for a couple of
years. "When Chris and I first discussed an original composition,
I explained I wanted something slightly different", said Graham. "I
wanted something that was going to appeal to our younger members,
whilst satisfying our audience, who are average age sixty plus!
We came up with the idea of a four minute piece, involving a Rock
Rhythm Section. We have some very talented young musicians in the
band and eventually Chris settled on Electric Piano, Bass Guitar and
Kit Percussion. The result was pretty amazing".
As well as the rhythm, full band and timps are included in the scoring.
It opens with solo euphonium and horn, making a short, but
definitive, statement, before rolling triplets wind up through the
band, which conclude as the Rhythm Section gives rise to a complex
series of time changes. Eventually the Rhythm Section takes over
completely, into a straight 4/4, punctuated by timpani. Building
again, an exhibition of low, full brass tone, flowing melody is taken
over by piano and again back to the Rythm 4/4. This builds once more
into a Cornet break. The Piano and Rhythm pull the music back into a
slow last few bars before one final fling to the end. And there
we have it, four minutes of contemporary music, extending the spectrum
of brass music, into a popular instrumentation form. You can
